Hindsight in History

Are we blessed with the gift of hindsight when forming our opinions on past and present problems?

An example is the Taliban in Afghanistan...who were funded by the American "Government of the Day" to fight against the Soviets.

Take into account this was at the height of the cold war and the Soviets were the enemy and a direct threat, then they can be excused for what they did. They were using it as an oppurtunity to fight a "common enemy" and secure mutual friendship amongst the mudjahadeen. Whilst there was some writing on the wall for the Americans I seriously doubt anyone could have predicted what would have come next.

It could be argued that if the American Government (including the whiter than white Jimmy Carter) hadn't stuck their nose in another countries business then we wouldn't have the problems of extremism, Bin Laden etc...

Thoughts?

Not stucking the nose in another countries business is not so easy at all. It was not in these days and it seems to be even harder nowadays. US tried with isolationism after WW1 but could not avoide to be involved in WW2. And think about the Middle East! If you don't back your friends you soon will have none any more.
Concerning fundamental terrorists there is, as I fear, no way to be safe. The open western society is a permanent threat for their way of life. If we stuck out of their counties this will not kep them from coming to ours. They know, if their people had the choice, they would also demand our freedom, even large parts of our way of life. The western civilisation is very attractive to the people there (and to their leaders, too), so if they can't produce a better society they seem to have no other chance than fight the western model.
Our Peace Activists like to qoute Brecht (mybe the wrong author): "Imagine there is war and nobody shows up". That's an interesting alternative. The Activists use to end the quoting after this sentence. But it goes further about that: "Then the war comes to you. You, who did not share the fight will share the defeat".

nobody could isolate today, but sometimes it is better to think first before acting. in my opinion the us governement never thought about what they were doing giving money and weapons to strange groups fighting a war. they never thought about what would happen if the soviets would be defeated or as it happend would stop to be enemies. nobody can predict how others will behave and act, but the taliban back there had much the same opinions as the taliban of today. it's only logical that they turned on and never stopped fighting.

the talibans weren't the first group to be supported by the us that turned against them. it has happend before and will happen again.

Topic is originally on about the gift of hindsight.

The Taliban and Afghanistan is such a sub topic...an example of hindsight to be honest.
