They have similar limitations to a male sniper. They were/are effective in their role. The Russians had an entire squadron nicknamed the "night witches" because of their tenacity.
But, warfare has moved on.

I also read something like that - in a James Bond story by Ian Fleming. I don't think that the quality of a sniper depends on his/her sex. With all disciplines of sports shooting men score better than women and if it comes to killing women have more difficulties as men. This is what I experienced when I was a hunter.
Maybe it's an effect of selection. There are thousands of men to become snipers / hunters. But women, who fight through all the resistance society builds up against sniping women, are a very much selected group. They surely are better than the average of male snipers.
But one fact I can not ignore. There was a terrorist group in Germany some 20 years ago - the "Bader-Meinhof-Group" - in which female persons played an importand part and were very quick in killing. So there may be a true nucleus in your article.

Ed made an important point,it moves on...It certainly does,there are new styles of warfare,and new players on the field..I will say that in my opinion the sniper options are limited for women until you get away from thinking stereotype..
In ww1 the tremendous import of snipers really came into play..A lesson learned from the american war of independance..Then came ww2,less importance to snipers the accent changed to firepower and to a degree integrated warfare..what i would rather talk about is terrorism and the advent of the closerange sniper..Usually when we think super sniper we think fantastic accuracy over loong range,with devastating results such as the taking "out" of a north vietcong general by a beardless American boy..OK now lets talk about a relatively new type of sniper. REquirements::tremedous reflex speed,,,deadly accuracy over max 40 to 50 metres,coupled wih non robotic thinking,and there she is,,your anti terroist sniper..

As per women snipers: I think they are just as capable as men but these new sniper rifles are very heavy and they may not be able to carry them.

I was once told a story by a former Squaddie about a sniper in the gulf using a 50 cal rifle. Apparently he missed the target by inches but the force of the round (velocity?) knocked his head off.

Ed: converting momentarily to inches...It was not inches ,but maybe an inch to an inch and a half..I am not going to give a dissertation on physics but this is correct..Among others we also use Israeli modified 50 cal,it is awesome..I think ED, that if you dig a little deeper,you will find that death was due to a wrung neck..the size of the bullet,coupled with its speed,passing at extremely close proximity..Think of it this way ,there you are ,stopped by the wayside,and all of a sudden a bloody chara goes by less than a foot from you,at about 80 MILES per hour ,your car is sucked into it ,SMASH !! thrown off,thrown everywhere,,same principle..

Thanks for filling in the gaps...I'm amazed the Russians never used their PTRS anti tank rifles as the perfect anti sniper weapon.

I'd assume you'd use it as part of a two man team. After all some Soviets carried the Maxim machine gun between three men, one carried the gun its self, the other two divided the carriage and the shield. They were some times used as support weapons, bit like the RPG. They missed out

She's Kurdish. Hidejo Kojima's choice was very pertinent. The best women Snipers in the world are in Kurdistan not Russia. They're deadly. Just ask Turkish soldiers Many of theme were not able to come back and report how accurate were their enemies.

Actually Kurdish women are deeply involved in military operations. They represent 45 % of the Kurdish guerrilla's forces ! Unseen in all armies across the globe !

Their very developed sniping skills are well known all across the globe. Their dedication to the cause of their nation is truly amazing. They really deserve respect and all consideration.

As for the guy who was saying that snipers are no longer useful ion modern wars it's just non sense.
They wouldn't be very handy in major conflicts between colossal armies, industrial conflicts like the II WW I agree with this, but they're extremely useful and efficient in both urban and rural guerrilla. Actually no army in the world is competent enough and prepared to face a very organized guerrilla. Surprise raids, ambushes : your goal is not to militarily defeat your enemies but to harass, exhaust and undermine them. You have all the time and the enemy is in hurry due to pressures from the public opinion. It worked almost all the time in history. Especially if the guerrilla has support from the civilians.

I think that women are just as capable as men if not more. They no longer have to cut their right breasts to compete with men.

I didn't say snipers weren't useful. I said warfare had moved on. There is a difference between the sniper of today and that of 60 years ago ie street fighting in Stalingrad and long range shooting in places like Iraq or Afghanistan.

I heard there where a lot of women snipers in the war in Vietnam too.
