Getting rid of Garden ivy
I have a type of ground cover ivy that is taking over one of my perennial gardens. I keep taking out as much as possible, but it keeps choking the rest of my plants. This year many of my other plants were very small produced less foliage and flowers. My peonies suffer the most. What can I do, other than take out the whole garden and start again?

I have the same problem, but with my vinca (ALL OVER my side yard!). What I did this year (early summer), was rake (the sturdy metal one, not the one you usually use for loose leaves) them all..as much as I could..and I took up a bunch of runners, too! I raked, yanked, pulled..and was left with the main roots. I poured a mix of corn gluten & water on them..I wanted to use as eco-friendly, organic one that I could. They seem to be gone, with some sprouts here & there that were easy enough to yank!
Of course, I don't know how big of an area you have..my side yard is 7x50ft.
Good luck on your battle!! ![]()

Beware Of Nargles & Watch Out For Those Garden Gnomes, They Nibble On Toes!!
Mighty, the deiseline IS eco friendly because it is inside the plant and when you pull out the dead plant the deiseline comes with it..I too have been known to use roundup, but i hate wasting good munni..As vb said,,roundup kills everything...Its kind of like antibiotics, kills everything...
don't anyone let thyme loose in their garden it turns into a cukoo..
sorry i meant mint.
round up
solves the problem definitly

sorry, forgot to add: to prevent killing other plants, apply it with a brush on the leaves. You need not touch all leaves, the herbicid goes to the roots and kills the ivy

I used roundup on mine and it did the trick. I did not put it on all the runners and it came back the first time so the second time I got as many leafs as I could and that did it. Be careful to make sure you do not get it on the plants you want to keep; it doesn’t discriminate on what it kills.
