I read an interesting paper once, suggesting that the Nephilim, together with many other giant species from the most diverse mythologies, might actually have been surviving tribes of Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis that our more recent ancestors could have come in contact with - which is one of the hypotheses considered today. They either interbred or the Neanderthalensis simply died out.
