I had one of these and did not know what it was until a neighbour informed me. I was totally unaware of its toxicity. Germany had about 16,000 victims in 2003. The phototoxic sap can cause blindness and severe skin burns. I sprayed the herbicide roundup on it which initially killed the three meter high plant eight months ago This month about 70 little shoots have sprouted up to five meters from the original plant, I sprayed again. Do not handle with bare hands.
Google giant hogweed for more info.

I'm second in row. I do the same as VBC555.
It's best to treat them with herbicide before the have built seed. To avoid spreading you should use herbicide that goes into the roots as well (round-up) and not only destroys the green parts.

this thing is renewing itself because roundup is not apprpriate..Roundup is also very expensive..This is what you do,,,,get your self a hypo syringe with the largest gauge needle, swing by the gas station for a litre of deisel fuel and start injecting the mutha as low down as is possibleand as much as you can get in..Lets see the mutha survive THAT!!

This is also how we get rid of the poisonous Sumac. These have a really bad root system that trails. Any poisonous plants will die with round-up, or any fuel, coal oil etc, but it has to be applied at the hottest time of the day, so the plant just sucks it up. Then less applications are needed.

I had a friend plagued by acacias, one day he came by Piet baby ygotta help me i'm going crazy..So i took my boschhammer a wood drilling bit,my chainsaw and away we went..he sawed the boles and then with the drill superslow i bored down into them, deep. For 3 days every opportunity he poured deiseline into the holes..Osmosis works very fast and the deiseline destroys the roots from within, and so these new shoots simply dont happen...
